Hillsboro Online Academy offers core curriculum from Florida Virtual Schools Global and electives that come from eDynamic Learning, an industry-recognized specialty curriculum provider.
Hillsboro Online features a rigorous, yet flexible, menu of online learning programs, designed to meet the varied needs of students and their families. Central to the HOA’s mission is a learning plan individualized to each student.
Parents and students should be aware that the demands of online courses are equal to or exceed those of traditional “face to face” courses. While online instruction places more responsibility on students, it offers greater flexibility fitting course work into a student’s or their family’s busy schedule.
Students will interact with teachers and other Hillsboro Online staff via a message system in Canvas, our Learning Management System, by phone or in person by coming in to our physical sites. Although student assignment submission will be mainly online, they may also remit hard copies by bringing them to our site or by faxing hard copies to staff. Students will take module tests online; however some exams are required to be proctored in a face to face setting; teachers will share details with students and their family. Any exception to this policy must be approved by school administration.
On-site staff, for core courses, are available for high school students at Oak Street Campus (440 SE Oak St 97123) which is just blocks from downtown Hillsboro. Associate staff, consisting of local certified, highly qualified teachers, is behind every elective course.
Attendance is tracked using the Daily Attendance question and by participation in the live Advisory meetings throughout the week. Currently our High School students have their Advisory meetings on Tuesday & Thursday. Students will have a 24-hour period to complete their attendance question.
The Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) includes tests administered annually to 11th grade students in English/Language Arts, Math, and in Science. In addition, high school students will undertake the extended learning application (senior project) as a graduation requirement. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Hillsboro School District diploma from Hillsboro Online Academy.
Please Note: As an online school, HOA is considered to be a “non-traditional school” by the NCAA. Non-traditional schools must go through an extremely lengthy process in order to become an NCAA-approved school.
HOA received NCAA approval for its core courses in August of 2016; credit recovery courses are not approved. Student athletes are encouraged to enroll in HOA courses. It is recommended that student athletes, who may be eligible for athletic scholarships at an NCAA Division I or Division II school, discuss enrollment at Hillsboro Online with their high school Athletic Director, since HOA does not have its own Athletic Director.

Course Outcome Grading
We want to share an important update about grading at HOA. This year, some of our high school teachers are piloting a new Course Outcome Grading System designed to provide a more accurate picture of student learning and proficiency in Hillsboro School District (HSD) course outcomes.
Here’s what you can expect from piloting classes:
- Canvas will no longer display total course grades. However, students will continue to see their formative work in Canvas—including assignments, to-do lists, calendars, and teacher feedback. The only change is that the overall grade total will not appear in Canvas. Non-Piloting courses will still have total grades in Canvas.
- Formative work refers to the practice and progress checks students complete as they build toward mastery of course outcomes. This may include quizzes, drafts, discussions, and learning activities. Formative work is essential because it helps students learn from feedback, track their own growth, and prepare for summative assessments that demonstrate their final proficiency.
- Grades will be visible and accurate in Synergy (ParentVUE/StudentVUE). Please use Synergy to check your student’s current progress and overall course grades.
- Grades are now based on proficiency in HSD course outcomes, meaning that grades reflect what students know and can do in relation to specific learning goals rather than an average of points.
Different Grade Calculation Methods
As part of this pilot, teachers may use one of two methods to calculate overall proficiency: a standard mean or a decaying average.
- The standard mean takes the average of all scores equally.
- The decaying average gives more weight to the most recent evidence of learning. This approach recognizes that students often make progress over time—so their most current performance better represents what they know and can do by the end of the course.
Proficiency Scale:
- 4 – Advanced: Exceeds proficiency; demonstrates deep understanding and application of skills
- 3 – Proficient: Meets the standard; demonstrates consistent understanding of key concepts
- 2 – Basic Understanding: Approaching proficiency; shows partial understanding and emerging skills
- 1 – Minimal Understanding: Beginning to develop understanding; needs additional support
- 0 – No Evidence: No work submitted or insufficient evidence to determine understanding
Letter Grade Conversion:
- 3.20 – 4.00 = A
- 2.40 – 3.19 = B
- 1.60 – 2.39 = C
- 0.80 – 1.59 = D
- 0.00 – 0.79 = F / I
We appreciate your support as we implement this pilot and continue improving how we communicate student learning. If you have any questions about this change, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher or counselor.
